Welcome, Welcome, Welcome! To this wonderfully unique railway carriage. Full of character and charm, Woodpeckers Carriage is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Tucked away on Blaen-Y-Cwm smallholding on Maelienydd Common, this calming oasis is a natural paradise. The Owners have carefully renovated the whole smallholding and are now self-sufficient in vegetables and fruit, and house poultry and bees. The wonderful garden was also opened for the National Garden Scheme in 2019.
Woodpeckers Carriage originally dates back to the early 1900’s and some of the historical charm has been lovingly kept. This quirky hideaway is perfect for guests seeking a welsh adventure with unique accommodation. A luxury glamping venue where you can escape the city and head deep into the country. We advise to pre pack all the essentials so you can truly immerse yourself in this gem of a place.
Woodpeckers Carriage has been renovated to the highest of standards. The beautiful cream kitchenette has a toaster, kettle, small induction hob, microwave and fridge. Perfect for cooking up some simple meals and tasty breakfasts, maybe even treat yourself to some pancakes! On the right hand side there is a breakfast bar, perfect for enjoying your meal, or planning the next day’s walking route. On the left hand side of Woodpeckers Carriage guests will find the sumptuous double bed. Looking truly inviting you will be fighting the urge to get straight into it! There is plenty of storage underneath the bed so you won’t run out of room. Woodpeckers Carriage also has its own en-suite shower room with toilet.
Woodpeckers Carriage boasts a pebbled secluded garden area, perfect to sit out on and enjoy those long summer evenings and do some wildlife spotting. A firepit is also provided so make sure to pack some marshmallows to create your own s’mores. Delicious! For those green fingered guests, Blaen-Y-Cwm is a working smallholding of 4 acres with two polytunnels, fruit cage, orchard, and raised vegetable beds. So there is always something to do in the garden if you fancy your hand at being a farmer for a day.
Woodpeckers Carriage is set in the most perfect location for nature lovers! Blaen-Y-Cwm smallholding is an oasis of trees on Maelienydd Common in the Llangurig to the Clun Valley region in the county of Powys, Wales. Maelienydd is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for wet and dry unimproved acid grassland. The site is essential for breeding and providing a wintering habitat for a variety of birds; including waders and a population of pillwort in some of the small pools. Red kites, buzzards, Skylarks, warblers, peewits, and curlews are common visitors to the area.
For the ramblers amongst us, there is an abundance of lovely countryside walks. We recommend The Elan Valley Trail. This nine mile trail starts in Cwmdauddwr, just west of Rhayader and finishes 13 km (9 miles) further up the Elan Valley at Craig Goch Dam. Parts of Glyndŵr’s Way path can also be accessed nearby to Woodpecker’s Carriage.
There are also nearby cycle routes. Blaen-Y-Cwm is on the Radnor Ring National Cycle Route 825, a circular route through Radnorshire, passing through quiet country lanes through some of the most spectacular scenery in Mid-Wales.
Failing this, why not treat yourselves to a few days of total relaxation. Relax with your favourite book and glass of bubbly, and just take in the sweet tranquillity of nature.
