Retreat and escape from the chaos of the outside world to Walden Lodge. This handcrafted wooden cabin combines a fusion of Welsh and American cultures and is part of ‘Hide Wales’. Inspired by the 19th-century Transcendental movement, Walden Lodge combines the best of luxury accommodation with the serenity of nature. Nestled away in a seven acre arboretum named Tresilian Wood, overlooking South Wales’ beautiful heritage coast, Walden Lodge promises to give you the ultimate stay. Situated in the quaint village of St Donats, only 25 minutes from Cardiff.
Reminiscent of prairie cabins in the era of adventure and pioneering, Walden Lodge’s name is inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s book ‘Walden or Life in the Woods’. His book reflects upon uncomplicated living in natural surroundings. Walden Lodge sleeps five guests in two double bedrooms, one with a single bunk. The Lodge is situated in a secluded spot making it a perfect retreat for adults or families with older children (minimum age 12 years), this is also one of their pet free homes.
Inside the Lodge
As you walk from the iconic American style balcony into this exquisite retreat you will find a beautifully bright kitchen. Equipped with all the essentials. You will be able to create some delicious dishes with ease to then enjoy around the rustic dining table which seats four. For breakfast, you can order Croissants, butter and marmalade for a small fee. After this, ‘Cwtch up’ on the comfy settee right by the warm, glowing, wood burning stove. Alcoholic beverages optional!
From the kitchen, open the beautifully patterned stained glass doors into the first of Walden Lodge’s double bedrooms. Featuring a double bed, a handcrafted green and blue Sian O’Doherty throw and original artwork by Ceyfn Burgess; depicting Welsh migration to America. The large bathroom is also situated on the ground floor, tastefully decorated with calming tones and a substantial walk in shower. Upstairs, Walden Lodge presents its second bedroom which has another double bed adorned with a handcrafted throw and a single bunk bed neatly tucked away.
One of the highlights of Walden Lodge has to be its covered terrace. Sit outside and dive into that book you promised yourself you’d read or just soak up the sounds of nature. The lodge is situated in a 7 acre woodland, so take your time to explore the wonderful tall trees, wildflowers and sea views . During your stay at Walden Lodge be sure to visit the Hide Pavillion, a relaxing space where guests can receive holistic treatments, enjoy delicious breakfasts or evening drinks. Once you’ve explored Tresilian Wood there are plenty of breath-taking coastal walks right by Walden Lodge for you to enjoy. At night, toast yourselves some marshmallows and just enjoy the warmth from the fire pit!
Walden Lodge is situated in the village of St Donats in the Vale of Glamorgan. Due to it’s great location there are lots of things to do and places to eat. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants within a couple of miles of Walden Lodge. These include; The Hare and Hounds, The Old Swan, Arboreal… and the list goes on!
Step back in time and visit St Donats Castle, but beware of the witch called Mally-y-Nos! Numerous churches, museums and gardens are also waiting to be explored. For the adventurists, The Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast is well known to ramblers and cyclists. The National Cycle Network route 88 runs throughout South Wales, providing an enjoyable path which hugs the coastline from Cardiff Bay to Bridgend. If you are more into water sports, why not try your hand at surfing at Southerndown Surf School or Horse riding with Ogmore Farm Riding Centre.
