The Bothy at Glascwm

The Bothy at Glascwm

In the remote hills between Hay-on Wye and Rhayader, The Bothy at Glascwm is a welcoming little off-grid retreat in the heart of wild mid Wales. Perfect for adults, and sensible children by prior arrangement, it sleeps three with a double loft bed and single sofa bed. Capturing the hearts of visitors, it’s a calm and cosy dog friendly getaway.  Digital detox requires no discipline here! With no Wifi or 4G you will meet your own uninterrupted thoughts and conversations like long lost friends around the fire.

Traditionally, a Bothy is a rough and ready mountain shelter for passing travellers to take refuge from the elements. While this little stone snug has all that rustic charm and mountain views, it’s no hovel! The Bothy at Glascwm is beautifully decorated, super comfy and complete with lots of thoughtful touches. Marshmallows for toasting by the fire, freshly baked bread, games, books and baskets of local food to order. The hosts even do all your washing up!

The Bothy at Glascwm has a satisfying solidity and authenticity about it. With locally handcrafted oak and ash woodwork, beautiful artwork, pottery and linens. There is a fully equipped kitchen in case you feel like roasting your own Welsh lamb (No washing up remember!). Bring some music to play on the Bluetooth speaker as you cook. A sofa with lots of cushions and blankets for snuggling, a woodburner and logs a plenty. For convenience there’s an (off grid!) compost toilet within The Bothy, and just across the lane you have a private shower room with a flushing toilet. Your double bed is up a timber staircase on a mezzanine. The skylight above the bed allows for gazing at starry nights or feeling the summer night’s breeze on your skin.

The area is rich with cycle trails and spectacular walks so The Bothy has a lockable log store where you can keep your bikes and muddy gear. There are maps of local walks and advice and ideas provided by your host, so toss your car keys aside if you wish. Across the lane there is a private timber framed sunroom, next to your shower room, for winter sun and relaxing with a good book or a glass of wine. A perfect way to relax after a day out exploring the trails or wild swimming!

While wonderfully remote, The Bothy at Glascwm is also surrounded by things to do. Especially suited to lovers of the great outdoors, it also makes perfect Hay Festival accommodation for fans of exercising the intellect. Hay-on Wye and Builth Wells are only a 25 minute drive away in either direction. If you fancy making your own Welsh pottery, book a lesson at the Alex Allpress Pottery School in Builth Wells. Hay offers bookshops galore and top notch food. The Michelin Chapters Restaurant and Tomatitos Tapas get rave reviews, and for a bookshop and a cafe head to Richard Booth’s Bookshop & Cafe!  Want to Canoe? offers canoeing on the river Wye at Hay.

The Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons lie to the south, and Cambrian Mountains to the West, so there is no shortage of options for walkers and bikers. The Trans Cambrian Way is an epic challenge, or hire a bike for an easy glide around the edge of the Elan Valley reservoirs, former home to the poet Shelley. Red Kites fill the sky and are quite a sight at the Red Kite Feeding Station near Rhayader.
